First Lady Jill Biden and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona Traveling to Knoxville This Week

First lady Jill Biden and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona are traveling to Knoxville this week to kick off the Road to Success Back to School Bus Tour.

The Department of Education’s Road to Success Back to School Bus Tour will include showcasing the different ways school communities across the country are supporting students and teachers. In addition, the tour is also serving as a way for the first lady and Secretary Cardona to see how schools are utilizing the resources provided to them by the Biden-Harris Administration’s American Rescue Plan.

According to a press release by the U.S. Department of Education, during their visit, the first lady and Cardona will “highlight ways states and districts are recruiting and preparing qualified educators for the classroom, and meet with teachers and teachers-in-training who are participating in leading teacher pipeline programs in Tennessee.”

The first lady and the education secretary flew into McGhee Tyson Airport in Alcoa on Sunday evening. On Monday, the pair will travel to a school in Knox County to meet with teachers participating in the state’s Grow Your Own Initiative. Finally, on Monday, the pair will wrap up their visit to the Volunteer State by delivering remarks at the University of Tennessee.

Tennessee’s Grow Your Own Initiative supports partnerships in order to provide “innovative, no-cost pathways to the teaching profession and will continue to build pipelines of qualified teachers and school district professionals.” The initiative is part of the state’s Best for All strategic plan, which sets a vision for Tennessee to be “the top state to become and remain a teacher and leader.”

After speaking at the University of Tennessee, the pair will then travel to Greensboro, North Carolina, continuing the Road to Success Back to School Bus Tour to meet with students at the North Carolina A&T College of Education and deliver remarks at a school rally.
